About this item

  • Finely hand-crafted Nantucket Square bottom round mouth small objects storage Basket, This little basket is the catch-all for those small items that you routinely toss onto the desk until you have a messy pile of stuff that's in the way when you need to work -- coins, keys, perfect for use as an elegant holder for your very limited space on .
  • An Square hardwood base begins this Nantucket basket and hand-tapered and beveled cane staves, meticulously hand-placed with only a whisper of space between the staves. The body of the basket is woven with Nantucket-grade cane and tightly compacted giving this Nantucket basket the ability to essentially hold water - a hallmark of my basketweaving skills.
  • Traditional half-round rattan reed rims are scarfed and tapered, then steam-bent to a wooden form for a perfect fit to this Nantucket basket.
  • The rims are then pre-drilled and nailed with thin brass escutcheon pins, which are then cut flush and peened over, then sanded for a smooth finish. Quality craftsmanship is seen in the small details, like the placement of the tapered staves and the additional piece of cane under the rim, giving this Nantucket basket a very refined and finished appearance.
  • This final finish includes multiple coats of hand-applied varnish and clipping of any stray cane hairs which are prone to appear during the basket weaving process ,strengthen and bring out the natural beauty of the materials. It will develop a rich dark patina over the years with use,The miniature Oval Nantucket basket Round mouth diameter 6.3 ”wide and is 4.25” high at the rims.

Product Description

Nantucket lightship baskets originated in the nineteenth century on Nantucket Island's famous South Shoal

lightship. Captain and crew took to basket weaving to pass the time on board.

By the mid-twentieth century these baskets were being avidly collected by the moneyed yachting set. The

passion for Nantuckets continues into the present century - and we share it. So much so, that we keep inventing

new contemporary baskets with classic Nantucket styling.

Our Nantucket baskets are made of traditional materials: hardwood, Indonesian rattan cane

turnings. Our signature hardwood is New England white ash.

These Nantuckets are woven in China to bring their prices within the reach of ordinary mortals, not just

wealthy collectors. The high level of weaving and finishing makes these baskets hard to distinguish from Nantucket
